Ebook About From his deathbed, Hero-King Inglis, the divine knight and master of all he surveys, gazes down on the empire he built with his mighty hand. Having devoted his life to statecraft and his subjects’ well-being, his one unfulfilled wish is to live again, for himself this time: a warrior’s life he’d devoted himself to before his rise to power. His patron goddess, Alistia, hears his plea and smiles upon him, flinging his soul into the far future. Goddesses work in mysterious ways—not only is Inglis now the daughter of a minor noble family, but at her first coming-of-age ceremony at 6, she’s found ineligible to begin her knighthood! However, for a lady of Inglis’s ambition, this is less a setback and more the challenge she was (re)born to overcome. “It’s not the blood that runs through your veins that makes a knight; it’s the blood you shed on the battlefield!” The curtain rises on the legend of an extraordinary lady squire reborn to master the blade!Book Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire ♀ Volume 1 Review :
A male hero-king on his death bed (old age) wishes to be reborn in the distant future to see how his kingdom is faring and to dedicate his life to fighting as opposed to ruling. The goddess fulfils his wish and he is reborn as the daughter of a knight captain sometime in the distant future. We follow her breezing through her first few major events in her young life until she enters the knight academy at the age of 15, events that tease us about the world and that it is quite troubled. The premise of the story is interesting. It raises the question on how much of an impact an individual has on the world in the long run and whether doing good is worth one's personal happiness. The question is given a bit more attention than just a backstory for the MC. The world is also intriguing. What is going on - both on the nature of magic, magic beasts and the threat of the floating city? What will happen? On the other hand, characters are simple (although the MC at least acknowledges how painfully naïve some people are), there is a child prodigy without repercussions and the MC breezes through life. What little is done with the gender bender part feels rather like boxes being ticked off. She now likes fitting dresses, sweet things, feels disturbed by the stares of men and is grossed out by the idea of marriage. There is of course the obligatory bath scene with women grabbing each other's breasts, although this trope was limited to only one scene. The pros and cons are reasonably in balance, and in the end I found it a reasonable enjoyable read, hence 3 stars. Sure... this of course is maybe what one might call "junk food" ..and a "isekai" trope ridden story...but honestly if you are reading review this you probably aren't at all surprised by this and are just curious if this one is worth reading.I'd personally say yes. I thought the translation was good. I do wish they could have clarified (perhaps with a translator's note) how "Inglis" somehow can have a nickname of "Chris". As someone who took Japanese in college, I can assure you that it makes sense...well, but mostly because of the language being romanized and appropriate "sounds" don't exist in English (specifically the conflict in how "L" and "R" translate). So unless you really wanna investigate it, just trust me in at the bare minimum that it wasn't a total mistake. You could probably type in "Inglis" into a japanese language vocalizer online and hear "chris" in there somewhere if curious what I mean.As so many isekai that use medieval "Swords and Sorcery"/"Dungeons and Dragons" (this one leaves out "MMO" mechanisms...so far), my judgement is mostly just if they bother to build the world in a interesting way and if the internal logic make sense.... IE, do characters "deus ex machina" every problem or do they at least work things through logically (like perhaps, do we get a "checkov's gun" or some sort of foreshadowing; basically does the the plot have a end goal?). I say this story succeeds that check so far and is engaging.Personally, I seeing stories where a character can be gender bent (who wouldn't want to at least once want to see what it's like to see life in another's shoes?), though if it turns into something lewd and not something more in depth and introspective it's boring to me. The character addresses their situation within story logic and respectfully so I think it works. If you were looking for a story to fully explore what it means to be reborn as a opposite gender you might be a bit disappointed however. Honestly, they could probably have skipped the gender bent stuff and you might not have noticed. It almost feels like a crutch to explain why a female character might be a "battle maniac" and have it be more believable...but probably unneeded. I did enjoy the thought as to what changes the main character would have to make in their behavior to not give away their prior life identity. My only complaint that this one is pretty short even for a light novel but short ones aren't unheard of. I just got finished reading "Roll over and Die", "I'm a spider, so what?", "Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear and "That time I got reincarnated as a slime." (yes I have way too much free time)...and those four series's authors just love to overwrite apparently! Or, at least they apologize to their editor at the end for their page counts which are all over 300 as far as I recall. This particular story is just about half the size. The price is inexpensive so I can't say you are getting a bad deal though. In this case, they actually tell you the correct page size beforehand that they can tell so you know upfront what you are getting. I've seen a mistake or two before on other books where they miscalculated (hopefully the publisher did the math wrong accidently?!) the page count to say it was bigger. But yes, hopefully that helps you with a decision if you were wavering. All I can say about myself is I may be a bit biased as you might notice I read a lot of books in this genre. I don't love ALL of them though. There are plenty of them who just wanna "hop on the train" and make no effort to establish any interesting spin on the genre/trope or even make their own world make sense. I already preordered the next one so I am looking forward to what happens next. I just wish these got translated faster... :( I appreciate they get translated though as well as they do.
