Ebook About
For Sorilla Aida, the war has been ongoing. Peace was called, officially, but in the shadows her battles continued. The Alliance and SOLCOM are ready to call an end to it all now, but no one has yet been able to tell her why. Why the fighting began, why her allies, and enemies alike, died. Not even why it was over. She had to know, or at least she had to try to find out. This would be her last mission, with or without SOLCOM's support, Sorilla was going to do the best she could to finally answer her questions.Among Enemies is the last in the Hayden War series.

Book Among Enemies (On Silver Wings Book 9) Review :

I wholeheartedly endorse what many other reviewers have stated - this series has been magnificent so far, but we’ve barely glimpsed a fraction of the universe the author has created and I sincerely hope this isn’t the end of Sorilla’s saga. Here at what he claims is the last book in the series we finally get a clearer picture of the Ross ‘El, the enigmatic “bad guy” aliens. Toward the end of the book we learn that they seem to have stolen/appropriated their highly advanced and nearly unbeatable tech base from some other species long ago, which in a way accounts for their less than perfect utilization of said tech base. And here at (what is hopefully not) the end of the series the MC finally applies everything she’s learned in the previous 8 books and begins figuring out how to use the Ross technology herself, thwarting a long game for universal domination that the Ross have been working toward for at least several centuries. The author ended the series (say it ain’t so!!!) with a nice send off, but also what I find an odd reference. The MC builds an underground shrine to her scarred battle armor, weapons and alien war trophies, then seals it up and puts a statue of a farmer pushing an old-fashioned plow atop the doors.Gives me a smidgen of hope for a new or spin-off series, since the author is likely referring to Isaiah 2:4. However there’s a different version that’s definitely more realistic based on human history: “Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not.”Sorilla plows for nobody, so maybe she’ll be back ... especially since right at the end of this book the author indicates that the alien Alliance may be devolving into civil war, now that they’ve discovered the treachery of their Ross ‘El “allies.”Sorilla may be too old and physically worn down to be a front-line Special Forces operator any more, but I can definitely see her coming back as a troubleshooter/troublemaker/envoy in a future series, stomping all over the so called “advanced” alien civilizations while advancing humanity’s expansion into the wider universe.Since she’s the only non-Ross individual who may be gaining the ability to easily speak with them, perhaps a posting as an Ambassador?(And c’mon, we all want Sorilla to use her new knowledge of Ross ‘El gravity/time/space manipulation to figure out what happened to Admiral Brooke and Task Force Valkyrie!)If you’ve enjoyed this series and are looking for something similar, check out Tanya Huff’s Confederation series - Valor’s Choice is the first book. It’s a two-part series following the adventures of Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr as she battles assorted aliens - and then at the end of her war fighting career becomes a heavily armed detective/troubleshooter in the second short series. (Hint, hint, Mr. Currie!)The Family Law series by Mackey Chandler, Perilous Waif by E. William Brown, Freehold by Michael Z. Williamson and In Fury Born by David Weber will also likely satisfy your fix for strong female MCs unapologetically kicking ass across the universe.
This is not Currie’s best work. First, the obvious typos everywhere, wrong words, missing words, double words, confusing sentences that don’t make sense... I don’t know why we see it here, it’s not in Curries earlier work. But it really is bad enough to be noticeable and hurt the book.Next, Sorella has always been awesome, but she has been good at what she does, and has always had a team she works with, all that is thrown out the window, and instead she just rambos through everything, killing hundreds of goblins, dozens of golems, and only getting a little banged up for her troubles. There is no strategy, just run into the Ross ship, figure out all of their technology, show them up like chumps, and then walk on home with all the intel and knowledge of an ancient super advanced alien race like it’s just a regular old Tuesday.Next, the Ross have always been an enigmatic race, and now we are given an inside look into their culture, and they are a bunch of uneducated snobs, who have no idea what they are doing... at least thats how they are portrayed. Panicking over everything, unable to focus on two tasks at once, unable to shut down and cut off one vastly outnumbered person, doesn’t lock out any systems, doesn’t lock any doors, they are a bunch of idiots who lucked into some advanced technology, and have no idea how to use it... quite a let down.I like the series, but this book is definitely not the cherry on top. I love the ending, great cap to Sorella’s arc, the beginning was good, with a solid set up, but the middle was just a bunch of Sorella going Rambo on the Ross... and not in a realistic good way.
